The Best Whole30 BBQ Sauce EVER!
I know the Whole30 is not for everyone, many of my friends liken it to cruel and unusual punishment. I promise, when I do a Whole30 the only punishment is the amount of dishes. It’s true, so much more is made from scratch that my dishes nearly double on a Whole30(!!), but when it comes to a recipe like this I’d rather do extra dishes than open up a bottle of store-bought BBQ sauce. So, even if Whole30 is not for you, I promise this BBQ sauce is.
The sweetness from this sauce comes from 8 dried and pitted dates, not cups of sugar, honey, or molasses… Just 8 dates. It is FANTASTIC and I hope you enjoy it as much as we have!
Whole30 BBQ Sauce
8 pitted, dried dates
1-6oz can of tomato paste
3 tbsp. apple cider vinegar
1 c. water
1/2 tsp. mustard seed
1 tbsp. smoked paprika
1/4 tsp. white pepper
1/2 tsp. onion powder
1/2 tsp. chili powder
SCANT 1/8 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. fresh cracked pepper
heavy pinch of salt
Combine all these ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Allow to simmer for 10 minutes before cutting the heat and letting rest. Once the mixture has cooled a bit, add to a blender or food processor with the following:
2 tbsp. Balsamic vinegar
1 tsp. hot sauce
2 tsp. olive oil
1 c. water, as needed to reach desired consistency
Blend together until smooth and enjoy! This BBQ sauce is sweet, smoky, and has just the right amount of spice! I really enjoy this sauce on bone-in chicken thighs with a side of rosemary and garlic roasted red potatoes. It’s just a simple and homey meal that the entire family will eat. There is something about homemade BBQ sauce that makes a world of difference, and I will always use this sauce regardless of whether or not I’m on a Whole30. Once again, clean and simple ingredients yield great results.
